Kigamboni “Train The Trainer” Social Media Workshop

The “Train The Trainer” Social Media workshop at Kigamboni Community Centre has begun! RLabs and TanzICT whom is conducting the training went out to the rural village on Monday (16th July) to do the first session.  This training will happen over a period of 3 weeks and two times  per week. It was good meeting all the participants and it was good to see the founding members of the Community Centre attending this training as well.

We started off the session explaining the importance of this training and that this training they would receive will not just be for their benefit but for the benefit of the rest of the community. We emphasized the importance of paying it forward and how they would be the champs to empower  this community through the use of innovation and technology.

First I did a talk about the various Social Media tools and how one could maximize them. After that it was time to ” get their hands dirty” and start signing up for the various tools. Day one consisted of them only signing up to Gmail and exploring the different functions this emailing platform had to offer them.It was important to show them the many functions that this platform had to offer and that it was not just used send emails back and forth from.

After seeing what all they could do with their email account everyone was exited and hyped up. They all said that they were looking forward to the next session and to see what more the world of Social Media has to offer them. They are fast learners and their enthusiasm just makes the training so  much easier . Next I will be taking them through the world of blogging and speaking to them more about story -telling. ”

The Social Revolution in KIGAMBONI has begun!!!

Social Media Is Free: Social Media Marketing Is Not

When i read this article it made so many things clear to me.Read it and then see what i am talking about.

I’ve heard this constantly from self-professed social media marketing “gurus”: social media is free! You should take advantage of it to promote your company! Why drop mail when you could market without spending a dime?

It’s seductive thinking, of course. With budget scrutiny perpetually on the rise, it’s natural to want to curtail expenses, especially if there is no net effect on the returns you could generate. The urge to fire your PR agency, stop dealing with direct response rates and just tweet like crazy can be difficult resist … but don’t do anything hasty. Like other forms of marketing, social media really does come with a cost. So, the issue becomes typical of all forms of marketing: how do you generate a return?

Many of the costs associated with social media marketing are not immediately evident. FacebookTwitter,LinkedIn and other platforms are free, as is widely known. There’s no cost to register, pop up a profile photo and let the world know what you think. Blogging can be virtually free, as well, if you use a hosted service such as or Blogger. There may be some mall design costs – for themes and backgrounds, for example – but companies with in-house designers won’t notice the costs, and even external design expenses tend to be manageable. The explicit costs, therefore, aren’t intimidating. Rather, it’s people that generate the expense.

The primary issue is content: you need to be able to publish blog posts, tweets and status updates. Depending on the nature of your organization, content development may require the collaborative efforts of a writer and internal subject matter experts. On top of that, there’s likely to be an internal approval process. With all these people involved, editorial planning enters the equation. Producing and publishing content is time-consuming.

In addition to content development, you need to think about content promotion – i.e., getting people know about and read your content. There can be public relations efforts, search engine optimization and community development and management involved. This involves more people, more time and more expense. Your company may not need to write additional checks, but decisions about how to direct your employees have to be made, and there can be times when additional hires become necessary.

As with any marketing activity, measurement is necessary – otherwise, you’ll never gauge the true impact of your efforts. Google Analytics, Facebook Insights and time with the likes of and Topsy, though free, require someone to look at them, crunch the numbers and draw conclusions. And, all of this has to be integrated into your broader marketing strategy.

So, is social media marketing really free? Well, anyone who’s made a serious effort to do it knows that there are expenses all over the place. Don’t take this as a reason not to hit the social media world to market your company, though. There are still large concentrations of people available, and the tools afforded by these platforms can make targeting relatively easy.

When you start putting together your social media marketing initiative, take a realistic look at the hard- and soft-dollar expenses involved. Identify the results you’ll need to generate a sufficient return on your marketing investment. Quite frankly, you need to engage in the same marketing discipline you would exercise in other activities, such as direct mail, telemarketing and advertising.

Social media marketing doesn’t have to be free to be effective: it just has to be well-planned.

I am attending the g/South Africa Conference

Tomorrow I am attending the Google South Africa conference that will be hosted at The Bay Hotel in Camps Bay, Cape Town. Unfortunately I did not attend day 1 as I had other commitments. I have however heard good reports online about day 1 and am now more exited to see what lies in store for us. I know this conference has lots to offer and I know that I am going to learn so much from it.

Here is the agenda for Day 2: For Business, Tech Entrepreneurs and Marketers.

Day 2 will be chock-full of Google product demonstrations aimed at tech entrepreneurs and marketers. Their goal is to help spur innovation and business growth in South Africa and across the region. Google want to inspire business to make the most of the web and mobile space!

Sessions will help you understand how to:

  • Use online tools to create and monetize content
  • Market your products and services online and with mobile.
  • Improve your online presence with web and mobile technologies
  • Use additional online tools to manage your business more effectively

Stay tuned for updates as I will be tweeting and blogging from the conference.

Voice Faceoff: Skype vs. Google Voice

With the help of Gmail, Google has turned Google Voice into a legitimate Skype competitor. Is it enough to make people abandon Skype for Google Voice calling?

The Skype software application has been around since 2003. Since its launch, it has garnered hundreds of millions of users because of its ability to make crisp and clear audio and video calls to both phones and other computers. It’s been the gold standard on voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) technology.

But Google has pushing its own technology hard.Google Voice  takes a different approach by providing each user with his own personal number that can call any telephone, along with features such as voicemail transcription and call screening. Last week, Google  integrated Google Voice into Gmail, providing a single, Skype-like interface where users can make and receive audio and video calls.

While Skype and Google Voice are different products with different goals, you can’t ignore their converging similarities. That’s why they’re the subject of this week’s Web Faceoff. Our question is simple: Do you prefer Skype or Google Voice for your VoIP and phone calls?

Let us know your answer in this week’s poll. Cast your vote by Friday, September 3 at 12:00 PM PT. Let us know what you think of the collision course between the two VoIP services in the comments.

Etv Tech Report Comes To RLABS

On Saturday Etv Tech Report (Etv) visited RLABS to do a story and some filming on what we are doing and how we are using Social Media to empower our communities. They arrived to at RLABS round about 1.30pm and started almost immediately with the interviews and gathering information as to how RLABS came into existence.

They did an interview with Marlon Parker the founder member of RLABS and then later requested to interview some of the staff and management team. They selected Craig Ross (Innovations Manager at RLABS) and Monique Ross (She’s The Geek, his wife) to tell them more about their stories and how RLABS had helped them in their recovery.

Craig and Monique both come out of a lifestyle of gangsterism and drugs and have amazing testimonies. Most important of all they are using what they have learnt to help others that have been in the same boat they (on drugs) have been. Look out for Etv’s new show and the story of RLABS.  Etv will be back at RLABS on Saturday to do a story of Marlon Parker’s new initiative: JamiiX.

Well done to all the staff of RLABS and the great work they are doing in and for the community.

The Launch Of JamiiX

Live JamiiX Demo

On Tuesday 8th June RLabs first Commercial Offering in the form of JamiiX managed by MoVigo Technologies was launched. With partners and offices in South Africa, United Kingdom, Finland and Malaysia, MoVigo is growing the JamiiX brand to be a global leader in managing conversations via Texting, Instant Messengers and Social Networks.

Some of the well known geeks that attended the launch.Amongst them is Dave Duarte.

A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step…and that is true for the story of JamiiX (a community-driven Web2.0 Innovation) that emerged from a disadvantaged part of the Cape Flats, Cape Town, South Africa. The launch of JamiiX will celebrate how a community began addressing local needs and social ills through the use of Innovation that was developed by the people for the people.

It must have been the proudest moment for the CEO of JamiiX, Marlon Parker. Lots of hard work and hours have been put into this new initiative along with him and the developers. The launch was at Sinns Restaurant, Wembley Square, Gardens, Cape Town. This was also the FIRST TIME for anyone to experience JamiiX and also our “cutting of the cyber ribbon” ceremony (“switch it on”) where all our registered users and the rest of the public would be able to start experiencing JamiiX.

The Cutting Of The Virtual Ribbon

Well done once again to Marlon and his team forthe awesome work they are doing.Keep it up guys.
